Which Antivirus Is Best

I work as a computer security professional and see about 30 virus infected computers a week come in to our technical department.  The following is what I recommend to our users for their personal home computers when they ask me Which antivirus is best.

OVERVIEW

Kaspersky Antivirus – I use Kaspersky.  It’s easy to use and includes a Firewall.  I like it because I don’t have to change anything, just install it and it does everything automatically.

Symantec/Norton antivirus is very popular and comes pre installed on most machines.  I personally would not use it because it slows my computer down, but many are happy with it.

AVG antivirus is free and works well.  It is what I used before I purchased Kaspersky.

Avast antivirus is not as good as AVG and crashes my computers.  It is also free.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

If you are happy to pay for antivirus software, then I recommend Kaspersky antivirus.  If you cannot find Kaspersky where you live, then use Norton.  If you want the free option, choose AVG free.

EXTRA

I will add here that anti-virus software alone is not enough to protect against all modern security issues (such as Malware).  The complete security package I use on my Windows machines is:

• Kaspersky 2011.
• Zonealarm free firewall.
• MalwareBytes.
• Super Antispyware.

All are free except for Kaspersky.  Together, those 4 pieces of software are what I use to keep my computers secure.
