buying an Ipad 2 when you already have an Ipad 1?
Someone asked me today, Should they buy an Apple Ipad 2 if they already own the Ipad 1? My advice to them was a fairly clear no. Admittedly, it was not a 100% clear answer of NO. Just a pretty sure its a no on the buy. Here are the reasons I gave:
- Ipad 3 coming in September with possibly rumored to be retina display. Thats just 6 months away to the ipad 3. At the moment, the Ipad 2 display is a significantly lower resolution than what it should be as far as i’m concerned. It needed to have the retina display, but apple and steve jobs decided not to go for it. It just really seems like the Ipad 2 is a stop gap between what Apple REALLY wanted to make. Yeah sure it has a camera, but seriously, who’s ever going to use that ona consumption device?
- Price – its a little high for a “toy”. Yes sure Mr web designer and photographer and gadget geek, you’ll use it everyday i’m sure. But will average Joe? Probably not. The mass market is not behind the ipad 2 and its showing in slow sales.
- Thirdly, and lastly, what are you going to use it for? This is a difficult one for the casual user. Photographers can show clients the photographs they’ve taken and hipsters can look cool and increase their already overvalued street cred stock by carrying one around but thats about it. For normals, thats casuals to you and me, its a pretty low need device. You’ll use it for watching a movie or 2 in bed, maybe as an alarm clock. A $499 alarm clock.
Oh, check out Qwiki.com, its a cool website with a talking wikipedia type functionality. You’ll visit it once and be colored impressed. It received about $8 MILLION in funding I hear. Thats quite a lot and has led some in the US to suggest we could see another dot com bubble next year.
Try the Ipad 2, if you like it, certainly buy it! If not, expect the price to drop in the coming months as the price curve move to approace market sentiment.
