How to check if you are banned from reddit

How to check if your site and url are blocked on reddit.  Useful if you are wondering “why is my website banned from reddit”!

Use this method to check if your website has been blocked on the reddit.com social news media website. I don’t use digg.com so not sure how to check that one.  Part 2 is here: How to check if your username is banned on Reddit.com.

If when you submit your link and hit refresh (F5),

  • The vote count goes to 0, this is a sign that its been reported to the moderators and is now in the moderation system for checking.

The most absolute spam url/user check for reddit is:

  • Using another connection, with no reddit cookies and not logged in, check the ‘new’ tab of the subreddit or reddit you submitted the website url link to a few minutes after submitting it. Its sorted by time/date, so find approximately when you submitted the link.  If your url does not appear anywhere in the list, your website is banned by the reddit spam filtering system.

What can you do to unban your website from reddit?

  • At this moment, unless you personally know high level moderators or admins of the site, nothing can be done to unban a url from reddit.com.
  • It is possible, although secretive at this point in time, that Reddit banning system stores the date the url was banned and thus, after a certain amount of time has passed, your url may get automatically unbanned.  This is unconfirmed at this time and should be taken as rumor.

I made a fresh site, its awesome and full of really useful content that Reddit will like.  What’s the one tip you can give me to not get it banned?

  • ALWAYS POST IN THE CORRECT SUBREDDIT.
  • If the sites about gaming, post in r/gaming, if its about fitness, try r/fitness and if its funny memes and absolutely useless yet hilariously time-wasting images then by all means post away to reddit.com main.

Does this leave a url open to damage by nefarious submitters?

  • In some ways, yes.  As a similar situation has always existed on forums and usenet banning/spam networks, where we found users spam submitting domains they did not like just to get them banned by the automated systems.  In the end, it is something we must accept as Reddit is a privately owned company (owned by Conde Nast – US), and therefore has the absolute right to allow or disallow submissions at its leisure.  Just try to be nice!

The random arguments made against moderation…

  • Reddits main argument against potential lawsuits arising from none legally allowed activities and submissions on its website is its use of automated systems to filter content (The Google argument).  Once humans enter the loop, it may become a different matter, legally speaking.  Although I should state at this point I am not a lawyer.

Note for readers from Reddit: I was not spamming reddit! I have another website I made (its a simple game website (flij.com) that I made for fun, containing no ads at all that I profit from.  Its like imgur, but for fl games). I thought Reddit main would enjoy it since r/gaming enjoyed it so much.  It got about 10 hits  before my website was banned by reddit.  I still enjoy using reddit to this day and hold no bitterness towards this incident.  ok, maybe a little…hehe

As far as I have seen “banning”, most of the site-wide banning comes from particular sub-reddits, and if you ask the moderator about a link you submitted not appearing, he will tell you what is up and in some occasions, to stop submitting more content from this domain for a while. I’ve done so and it works perfectly. HackerNews is another completely different avenue… Its banning policies are harder, luckily I got my “karma” back a few weeks ago (and one of my posts hit front page, landing 18k visits… I’m still grinning about this one).

    Cheers,

    Ruben.

  4. 18k visits is amazing!

I’ve found writing genuinely useful posts does amazing things for bringing new users to a blog. Unfortunately in my case, I submitted the link to flij.Com directly to the main Reddit.Com reddit, so it was the highest level admins or highest of high moderators who marked it. They clearly have a heirarchical structure, similar to wikipedias moderation system, whereby higher level mods cannot be overruled by lower level subreddit mods.

Its a real shame as I made flij.Com specifically for reddit users to use. Ah well!.

  5. I find the moderators on reddit can be very heavy handed at times. You are correct in telling users to stick to subreddits, I would add they should not submit their URL more than once a week, at most, to reddit.

  6. Where exactly is the facebook like link ?.

  7. Hey Sunny, hover your mouse over the share block to see facebook/twitter links.

  8. Extreme facts! I have been looking for something such as this for a long time now. Thanks for your insight!.

  9. I think my friend’s blog (a non-revenue generating/no ads site) has been banned from Reddit. I set up both Digg and Reddit accounts for him. Told him to post content from other sites, comment on stories that he found to be interesting, etc. One of the first things that he did on Reddit was to create a post that said something to the effect of “Help me get a bunch of views on my site” and posted it to the main Reddit page. I promptly had him delete the post, and that was about a month ago.

I just tried to post a relevant link to a picture from his site in a sub-reddit this evening and it disappeared almost immediately.

    • Yep, posts like that get flagged in seconds. The whole of Reddit has become a self sustaining ecosystem over the past few months. They have self-posts and imgur links and care heavily about website trust and the hivemind concept. They are afraid of change, new challenging ideas and malware.

Further, the userbase is primarily poor: student/unemployed programmers. Not the best target market as far as revenue is concerned.

Basically, I don’t think it’s a very good place to advertise a new website.

  10. The Federal Govt. Is operating so far outside of its design parameters that this type of discussion becomes futile. IMHO the place to start is eliminating tax which would force massive reductions in power and programs, bringing the govt. More in line with the founders structure. Only then can a discussion vis-a-vis federal and state govts. Become worthwhile.

  11. I think a lot of banning comes because the moderators are generally young and often don’t like opinions that don’t reflect there own.

    • I agree deano. This article was written just as the moderation system we now have was being introduced to subreddits. It’s such a shame how Reddit went from a free community model to power tripping moderator model.

I miss the old Reddit. Now it’s just 12 year olds debating politics and an cheap imgur frontend. Back then it was a great community of intelligent thinkers. Gone forever eh.

  12. Un saludo y muchas gracias.
